The acronym LEEP stands for Loop Electro Excision Procedure. This is a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention of the uterine cervix (visible portion of the uterine cervix) in the event of an abnormal screening smear. A thin metal loop is connected to a high-frequency electrical generator, which allows for the precise removal of abnormal tissue from the cervix. The intervention aims to remove diseased tissue, without unnecessary removal of healthy tissue. The use of electrical energy allows both precise cutting and coagulation at the same time.
